Project Description

Prompt partners with universities to leverage the combined academic, technical, and pedagogical resources of both institutions to positively impact middle school academic achievement and career preparation. This effort aims to develop and deploy a virtual instructional context that provides career counseling, algebraic tutorial content, and practical application of inferential and analytical reading skills within a digital gaming environment. The gaming challenges that students confront within this virtual environment, which are presented in a combination of interactive animation and passages of descriptive and explanatory text and audio, consist of work place tasks requiring practical application of middle and high school standards in Math and Reading. This highly contextual and concrete approach to student mastery of academic skills and to raising student awareness of the relevance of academic skills to lucrative career opportunities is consistent with the following:

  • The educational and economic needs of the community served by both institutions
  • The emerging research regarding the potential of gaming to motivate and instruct students
  • The urgent demand for engaging K12 instruction to address distracted and low performing subgroups
  • The delivery of middle school career counseling curriculum
  • The efforts of the various DOEs to compile an online repository of modular digital media assets for K12 teachers.

Project Implementation

These games are designed carefully for each grade level with appropriate content and suitable questions to improve the student's knowledge. Each student is authenticated against a student database before being allowed to play the game. Once the game is started, suitable questions are displayed based on grade level at key places of the game play. Online help is provided to students to aid them in answering questions. Timer based logic is used to ensure that students respond to the questions in order to progress in the game.

The art work is created using popular modeling tools like Maya and 3D Studio Max by expert graphic designers and content developers. Once the animation and texturing is completed the content is ported to a Game Engine and the game play is implemented using C-Script and C-Lite. All of the activity by the student is saved to a database for future performance analysis. Oracle and MySql are supported as backend databases while the performance analysis tool is created using J2EE technologies like JSP, Servlets and Struts frame work.
